November 10, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is in response to the continuous lack of research journalism throughout various issues of the Pacifican. Having read the article about President Don DeRosa in the November 7th, 2008 issue, I found it to be the last straw of bad journalism. While there are plenty of articles within the Pacifican that are very well researched and written, there are many articles that fall short of good reporting. Whether it is misstated facts, lack of information, or articles written at the last minute, all these variables equate into poorly written articles, however, these issues can all be addressed accordingly.

Do not get me wrong, there are many writers in the Pacifican that I have the utmost respect for. For example, one writer took the time to set up a meeting with my Vice President, Sophie Zumout, and myself. She was well prepared with various questions, and made the effort to assure that they were reporting on accurate facts. On the other hand, there was a writer who wrote an article on ASuop that was soaked in factual errors and misrepresentations. The reason that specific article turned out as such is because the writer did not contact one person within ASuop, and began writing the article a day before it was due to be published.

I am confident that the Pacifican staff has pride and integrity in the work and service they provide to Pacific. And while ASuop does provide funding to the newspaper, it is the students that pay the ASuop fee who directly fund the Pacifican. With that said, the Pacifican and its writers are privileged with the responsibility to produce a well written, properly researched newspaper. Likewise, I see it as my responsibility and duty to do what is best for the student community. For this reason, I am writing to hopefully encourage such standards of journalism.

Best Regards,

Edwin Lindo - ASuop President - University of the Pacific

Edwin needs to be the president that we elected to be our voice. He seems to only act when there is a direct attack on President Derosa. HE seems to be the presidents guard dog. What happened to the asuop president actually affecting change for the good of the students? You seriously need to reevaluate your political actions Edwin.

i am really LOL\'ing at all this drama. HAHA. I\'ve read the articles, I\'ve seen the pictures of this Lindo guy being all buddy buddy with DeRosa. I bet he\'s been his the presidents house, eats dinner with him atleast once a semester.

Did i research this? No. Its truthiness, information i got from my gut. Now prove me wrong Mr. Lindo, since you will probably see this comment and every other comment people say about you.

Keep up the good work. Stuff like this makes me proud i don\'t go to Pacific anymore.

I have to agree with Edwin. The articles are often poorly proofed. I think some of the writers should remember to \'F7\' their docs and spell check before they are submitted. Research your articles! This is the UOP newspaper. Students should expect more from it. I know the pacifican staff does what they can with what they have. They need some direction. An advisor who will guide them. Structure with in the paper. Something they clearly do not have. Someone should be there to say no to the bad topics and no to the poorly written articles. I hope to see the issues improve. It is about time someone called them out on this. Thank you Edwin.

If you want something done about, why not fix it yourself? I mean, everyone complains about the paper and its mistakes, but no one wants to step up and take charge. The staff writers and editors work hard to as much as they can out of their own free will, and not everyone probably has the same amount of journalism experience. It's just frustrating to hear feedback only when there is a controversial issue but the paper usually gets ignored when there are substantial stories and articles.

An editorial is an opinion I dont see what the problem is in publishing an opinion. Kinda like how in my opinion the only reason why Edwin is president is because Sophie was his running mate, thats my opinion, my gut feeling, and not entirely based on fact. The editorial on President DeRosa brings up an important point somebody feels in their opinion that there is a disconnect between the student body and the upper management. Why wouldnt somebody want to bring up this point? I came to Pacific because of small class sizes and the opportunity to know my professors and faculty. Thats probably the reason why many people came to Pacific. If in somebody's opinion there is a disconnect between students and faculty then why not talk about it?

I am sorry edwin but you might well be the next in line for being the phantom.

You do not have to agree with editorials.Just like i dont agree with yours. But i am not going to say that YOU DID NOT RESEARCH this and what not.

You can have opinions on the editorials but you cant pass a judgement. You kill the spirit of the conecept of editorials.

One thing was pretty clear. AsUOP president doesnt care about the paper untill President is attacked. I think he needs to get a reality check and realize that we the students elected him to represent us.

The Pacifican is like most other newspapers. As you page through a newspaper, there are certain articles one enjoys and others one finds uninteresting. Many articles printed in the Pacifican are a bit of a bore but the same could be said about many other newspapers. Is there room for improvement? Yes, absolutely. Thank you, Edwin, for putting a spotlight on the Pacifican although I disagree with many of your comments. In the future to fortify your argument, perhaps you can offer a list of articles and dates they were published as examples of poor journalism. That said, I think most of the writers work very hard and do a fine job. I hope the next time you read a great article in the Pacifican you will take the time to send a letter of commendation in the interest of fair and balanced oversight.

I have heard numerous comments that the Pacifican is THE WORST school newspaper ever! Despite that being their personal opinions, there is some validity to their comments. It is a sad ploy to see a college newspaper look to find controversial issues and exploit them to the point to which they border the realm of reality. So what if Edwin wants to come to President De Rosa's aide. President De Rosa has done more for this school then people think and has raised more money than the Pacifican gives him credit for. Here is some proof for you: The editor of this newspaper, Devon Blount, said that he brought enrollment in this school from 700? Does that even sound plausible to you?
Does anyone even know about our previous president's before De Rosa? Put it this way, they had their office at the very top of the tower. What does that say about their viewpoint?
and to whom made the comment about being Edwin being a phantom. Check yourself and look to see all the events he attends. Also, I think it is a good thing that our ASUOP president and the president of our school bond; it shows initiative on both ends to figure out the next step for what the students of Pacific want. None the less, you're continuing to bash people who have done nothing but try and make it so your time here at pacific is better than it was the day before. If anything you should be thanking them.

Nice little write up.. however the presidents office is not at the top of the tower, its behind Anderson Hall in the "Presidents Office". The top of the tower is a water tower. :cry

Do some research before making accusations. Nice try though. :)

Power struggle much? I think this is just mostly the administration trying even more to enforce their own values on the students.

Just because you think that the Presidents are good people doesn't mean that they are good to everyone else.

The paper didn't bash President DeRosa, they even commended him at one point. I think you should think about all the other students in the school as well
