The University of the Pacific’s Theatre Arts Department and The Conservatory of Music debuted The Mikado on March 5 at 8 p.m.
Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of the Pacific James Haffner directed the show, with music direction by Michael Sokol.
Associate Professor of Music and Director of the University Symphony Orchestra Nicolas Waldvogel conducted the orchestra. Unlike recent shows, the orchestra sat in the pit in front of the stage, visible to the audience.
Cathie McClellan was responsible for the vibrant costumes, and Randall A. Enlow headed the as always remarkable set design. Thanks to Randall A. Enlow, Pacific’s Long Theatre was transformed into the Legendary Town of Titipu. The stage was set in front of a background of sky that continuously changed shades with the mood.
The Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operas, provided an excellent display of vocal talent on the part of the cast.
Gentlemen shuffled about the stage singing and flapping open fans to the beat of such catchy tunes as “If You Want to Know Who We Are” and “Behold the Lord High Executioner.”
Katie Carlson lit up the stage with her contagious giggle and infectious vocals. Her presence on stage was perfection within the silly story of The Mikado.
Once again Jesse Barrett, as Nanki-Poo, took the show to the next level. His refusal to ever break character, amazing vocal ability and funny facial expressions drove the show.
However, Martin Lehman unarguably kept the audience alive with his comical demeanor and expert portrayal of Ko Ko, The Lord High Executioner. His rendition of “ Willow , Tit Willow” kept the audience laughing to the end.
Justin Witt’s performance as the man of every suit, Pooh-Bah, is also not to be forgotten. His casual yet pompous attitude matched with his great vocal skills resulted in a Pooh-Bah to remember.
The Train of Little Ladies brightened the stage with their lovely vocal accompaniment, beautiful dresses and coy flirtations.
The Theatre Arts Department looks forward to their next show in the end of April, Deal Man Walking. Call 946-2867 or go online at tix.com for ticket information.
