Pilipino Cultural Night: Sino Ka Ba? PDF Print E-mail
By: Jennifer Hite-Smith - Editor-In-Chief

“Who are you?” or “Sino Ka Ba?” was the theme of this years annual Pilipino Cultural Night.

Last Sunday the Kilusan Club, Pacific's club that celebrates Pilipino heritage and culture, help this annual event. Kilusan clubs from local high schools and Delta Junior College were also involved.

The evening told a story. A story about a young Pilipino- American boy who was trying to find himself, define himself. Appropriately, the play took place in a college Pilipino Cultural Night: Sino Ka Ba? setting. An exciting and emotional play gave the audience a chance to truly ask themselves, who am I? The scenes of the play were mixed between cultural dances and singing.

The evening began with the singing of both the United State's national anthem as well as the Pilipino national anthem, again signaling the efforts to unite rather than divide. Dancing throughout the evening included a Muslim dance called Sarimanok, a Chatemp Routine, an Urban Routine, and a Barrio Dance Medley.

Kilusan Pilipino dancers wore Pilipino clothing to accompanying these traditional dances. The outfits changed in almost every scene. The variety of vibrant colors and styles to gave an honest portrayal of Pilipino society and  tradition.

One unforgettable dance of the evening used thick bamboo sticks that carried dancers above the ground. These sticks were used again in another traditional dance in which some dancers jumped between them as other moved them along the ground.

The mission statement of Kilusan Pilipino embodies strength, pride, and unity. They are one of the largest and most well known clubs on campus.

The club aims at uniting Pilipino students on campus, but also engaging other campus clubs, Pacific, and the Stockton community as a whole. They invite diversity within their club, and you do not have to be ethnically Pilipino to join and celebrate Pilipino culture.

In addition to this annual event, they participate in community service and networking events throughout the community.

They choose to display the talents of their members through the talents held within the club. Therefore, there annual Pilipino Cultural Night is a all encompassing show: singing, dancing, acting. But it does not stop there, Kilusan allows for members to show their strength as leaders and friends, too.

Look forward to this evening of cultural excellence next spring. If you want more information, contact Pacific’s Kilusan Pilipino Club through ASuop.
