Electric President Good Morning, Hypocrite “Electric President”
Alright, think The Postal Service with less blips, a slightly less dreamy voice (oh, that Ben Gibbard is such a heart throb) and more “ba bas.” That’s Electric President in a nutshell. While portraying a lot of the same qualities as The Postal Service, Electric President do separate themselves from being complete rip-offs by adding an ever-changing dynamic to each song. On the opening track, “Good Morning, Hypocrite” they develop the song slowly and mix their timing and harmonies up until they bring you back to the ever catchy “ba bas.” Overall, Electric President does nothing to wow you, other than their unfathomable amount of angst throughout their album.

The Heart Strings Her New Disaster N/A
A keyboard dominated, uplifting pop-ballad. The Heart Strings are a fairly new band and are in the studio recording their first album, which might be hard to find here on the west coast, since they are from the United Kingdom. “Her New Disaster” is a keyboard dominated, uplifting pop-ballad. While the keyboard melody is what you will take away from the song on the first listen, the backing trumpet that breaks in after the chorus is one of the more redeeming factors the song brings. The Heart Strings seem to spring from the same mold as Kite Flying Society that was reviewed here, so if you enjoyed that you should definitely check out The Heart Strings.

Built To Spill Goin’ Against Your Mind “You In Reverse Pre-Release Single”
Oh, the toils of youth. You look back at yourself and wonder what the hell you were thinking. Well, Built to Spill was one of the bands that I do not regret enjoying from this period, and for that I owe them. Their new single, “Goin’ Against Your Mind,” is a pre-release to their first album since 2001. It starts off with a simple drum rhythm overlapped by two chords fluctuating. They gently break you into a classic Built to Spill song complete with over-synthesized guitars breaking in and plenty of pure rocking out. The song could have been cut significantly from its 8-plus minutes, but that is just not Built to Spill’s style. It is a great song for them to release to get some publicity for their much-anticipated album.
