With the summer coming to a close, and the new class of 2010 coming on campus, the Housing & Greek Life office is alive with activity. With more than 2,500 students moving into on-campus housing this fall, the Orange & Black Crew(OBC) is responsible for providing these students help with moving their belongings.
For the previous two years I got to move in early (which is a big plus) and then volunteered my time in assisting my peers with moving their personal items into their room or apartment. In return, I met plenty of new people, didn’t have to pay $50 a day to move in early and I was settled, relaxed and ready to go for the beginning of classes. I also worked pretty hard in the Stockton heat but it was worth it. This year however, the Housing & Greek Life office changed how the OBC is run and in turn is making it very viable. From the .pdf document sent out to Pacific students on July 31st, “both supervisors and crew will be paid for their service to the Pacific Community.” Scott Rausch, the Area Coordinator for North Campus is responsible for OBC this year. Last year “everyone used to get free meals, but they didn’t eat all of them, so we were wasting money.” After heeding the advice from the workers last year, they came to the conclusion of paying the workers instead and “letting them use [the money] however they wanted.” By now you may be wondering what will Pacific pay for students to move in early, and work the Orange & Black Crew. Scott Rausch also replied “the crews [will] get $8 an hour for roughly 15 hours” of work. This is higher than minimum wage (as of August 1st, 2006) and pretty good pay for an on-campus job. He then went on to say that of the three open positions for supervisors they “would get $10 an hour for roughly 20 hours of work. That’s on top of the free housing for a week, and getting to move in early.” One advantage to being a supervisor is they get to move in on Tuesday, August 15th, which is earlier then some RA’s. “The supervisors get to move in earlier because we want to meet with them a couple of times to go over what we need to do … How they should be supervising, what crews should be doing, etc.” The Orange & Black Crew is an excellent beginning-of-the-school-year job, which lasts for 4 days. Of course on Sunday, after the freshmen are applauded in front of Faye Spanos, there is a B-B-Q that you’re expected to attend. Free food is available. If you would like to work on the Orange & Black Move In Crew, send Scott Rausch an

Helping your peers, meeting knew people and getting to move in early just jump-starts your new year and makes for a more enjoyable time for all. Views: 424
