ImageHalloween is rapidly approaching and so the female populous of this campus are running around finding the sexiest costume they can. Halloween is the one time of the year that people can wear as little as thought possible and they won’t be considered a slut.

Sure, the word ‘slut’ is a very demeaning word, and when I started writing this article I received some very negative feedback from my peers, a mere “WTF are you thinking?” But it’s true, scantily clad women will walk from Fraternity house to UC to Townhouse, dance their booties off and consume booze by the truckload, even though it’s Alcohol Awareness Week.

Some could say the purpose of Halloween is to “hook up,” others who are not as interested in this field of being promiscuous could say “it’s more about showing the goodies, not getting them.”

Stefanie Heminger, most notoriously known as FMSJ, says she always thinks about “how much skin can I show?” and “what can I wear so that when I get inebriated my boobs don’t fall out?”

While the male populous of this campus may not put as much effort into their costume, as just an easy “out-of-the-bag” costume of a giant penis or a mask and a robe will suffice. Last year, one man walked around as a “Facebook profile”, a giant poster board with his face in the picture frame and a “poke” button on his belly. Sure it was ingenious and easy to put together, but most notably he was fully clothed.

During my “extensive research” on this topic, I came across an article written on October 19th in the New York Times on this very issue. Titled “Good Girls Go Bad, for a Day” by Stephanie Rosenbloom, she talks about how women who dress sexy for Halloween is just about letting loose and escaping the “workday, ho-hum dress code.”

What really perked my interest is that Ms. Rosenbloom admits in her article is what I am doing here has been done before. “The trend (Dress-Like-A-Whore Day) is so pervasive it has been written about by college students in campus newspapers.”

A friend of mine last year showed up at my birthday party (Halloween is my birthday, Facebook will alert you to that shortly), dressed as a question mark. She wore black panties, fishnet leggings and black electrical tape over her nipples in the shape of a question mark. Erotic, exotic and out-right pleasing to any man who saw this garb.

Tiffany Yee, a junior in the pre-pharmacy program said “Halloween is the one night of the year that girls can be anything they want. Girls hate being labeled as sluts and Halloween is when they can look like one without being labeled as such.”

However as Pacific usually starts to see on Thursday nights, some students will start the party early and will walk around in a different costume each night this weekend. Which then counters Tiffany’s argument and allows for students to dress in provocative clothing for almost five days in a row.

Of the five guys I called up for comments only one of them had something to say. He remarked that for the past three years he’s had a girlfriend. He did not appreciate that his girlfriend dressed slutty and that he was also tempted by other girls doing the same. He left town every Halloween so that he stayed faithful. This year will be different for him however.

Unfortunately, some professors believe that education is more important than the party scene that surrounds Halloween. Many of the male students I spoke with said they have tests on Monday and Wednesday and that will put a damper on their partying abilities as they need to study. Some even said they would go home just for the peace and quiet they need.

Halloween is a wonderful holiday for some. Personally, it’s just a birthday for me, for others it’s a time to let loose, get wild and crazy and dress how they usually wouldn’t. For many, it’s a giant party weekend of getting smashed and partying hard. Whatever your fantasy is this weekend, live it out, be safe and have a blast!
