- 1937: joined the UnitedPress
- 1939-1945: covered events of World War II as a foreign correspondent
- 1942: covered the battle of North Atlantic
- 1944: reported on the Allied invasion of Normandy Beach
- 1946-1948: chief correspondent for United Press in Moscow
- 1950: joined CBS News as a correspondent
- 1953-1957: hosted historical recreation series You Are There
- 1957-1967: narrated documentary series Twentieth Century
- 1962: became anchor for CBS Evening News,
- 1963: CBS Evening News expanded to 30 minutes; Cronkite told nation about death of JFK
- 1964: briefly replaced as anchor; public dismay had CBS reinstate Cronkite
- 1967: became the ratings leader of the evening newscasts
- 1968: Cronkite said, “It seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of Vietnam is a stalemate”; President Lyndon Johnson decided not to run for a second term
- 1969: reported on Apollo mission
- 1972: presented overview of Watergate Scandal in special report, keeping issue in focus
- 1977: historic interview with Egyptian President Sadat
- 1981: retired as anchor from CBS Evening News; received Presidential Medal of Freedom
- 1991: hosted educational program Dinosaur!
- 1993-1996: Discovery Channel had Cronkite hosting 36 documentaries
- 2006: introduced new CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric
