It’s a week before Thanksgiving and things can’t get any better. The game companies are releasing new titles for the XBOX, the movie industry is pumping out new DVD titles for the holiday season and students are beginning to realize fall semester is almost over. On top of that, athletes are under pressure from athletics to “un tag” themselves in pictures on Facebook which show them consuming alcohol and the rest of us are just going along with our business.
This past weekend was very hectic. It started with writing an exquisite article on being “sexiled”, which I might say is very well written and has received numerous chuckles and laughs from my peers who have read the article on my MySpace blog. Then on Thursday night I found myself writing another article on how college students should do more with their lives than just drinking themselves stupid everyday.
I finally decided to go home Friday to spend some quality time with my dad and we found ourselves seeing Borat on Friday night. With the nude scene and all the comments made during the film, it is not a movie to see with your parent.
After the Men’s Basketball team beat Bakersfield on Saturday night I found myself in my apartment playing Beirut with one of my neighbor’s father and brother. There never was a time in my college career where I thought I would teach a 55 year old man how to play Beirut and then proceed to annihilate him game after game. I can’t complain much; he did buy the beer and was a good sport about it.
However, I did later find out he is not very fond with paying $40,000 a year to send his son here. He did bring some words of advice though. College is more about the social life and learning what to do and what not to do. Don’t spend so much time on your studies because once you have your degree it really doesn’t mean much. This man spent 3 semesters in college and still managed to have a very successful career. “Your college years are the best time of your life.”
This then brought me in to reality as I soon realized that Thanksgiving break is right around the corner, and what does that mean? Party! But not the kind of party you’re thinking about. When I go home, I rarely drink alcohol. Even at Thanksgiving dinner, wine, beer and champagne is offered to me, and I would rather drink sparkling apple cider.
Amazingly enough, I spend more time being a designated driver while at home then I do at any other time during the school year. It is as though I’m so sick of drinking while I am at school that going home is just a chance to enjoy life. Sure, all my friends are home and we do hang out, but I rarely consume alcohol while there. It is not because my parents don’t know that I drink, because they do. I throw a few back with my dad every now and then but it’s just not something that interests me while at home.
Winter break and spring break is usually the same way. Spending time at home with my family and being sober, for the most part. Winter break is really about working so that I can afford my spring semester and spring break is a wild drunk fest that starts in Anaheim for the Big West basketball tournament which usually ends with me heading to San Diego for the sun or Lake Tahoe for the snow.
To continue the randomness of this article, Lake Tahoe area ski resorts are supposed to open on Friday which means ski season is here and I am prepared to take full advantage (or as much as the wallet can afford) of it. Kirkwood is only an hour and a half away and last year they provided $29 lift tickets with proof of being a college student.
I guess the only way I can clear up this article, is just wait for a more organized article once school starts back up again. And for those of you who have ever ventured to The Pacifican Online, check out the perspectives section, because I am publishing my two other articles there. Read them, comment on them and have fun. But remember, if you have friends that are athletes, untag them in pictures on Facebook if they are drinking. I am not sure why, but I am told athletics doesn’t like it.
