Operations, temptations, and frustrations; this, my friends is the core of ABC’s hit medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy”. You might be saying, “Yeah, that’s great, but there are many shows which have at least two of those components.” Maybe. But in order to get the whole picture we might need to start from the beginning, the pilot episode.
We are first introduced to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), the central character, at the local bar in Seattle, WA. After knocking back a couple drinks at the counter, Meredith chats up an attractive stranger and totes his cute booty back home for a little more than dessert. The next morning at work though, to Meredith’s surprise, last night’s one-night stand turns out to be one of the attending surgeons, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). This anonymous one-night stand then sets the foundation to the personal drama found among the characters of “Grey’s Anatomy”.
Although the constant sexual tension is one of the biggest factors of success for “Grey’s Anatomy”, you can’t forget that it is, after all, a medical drama. Therefore, the writers constantly look for the worst possible diseases, accidents, and mayhem that could possibly occur in a hospital. To check out one of the most heart-wrenching episodes, let’s go back to last year’s post-Super Bowl special. After men everywhere ended the football season either loving or loathing the hundred dollars they bet on their beloved team, women waited through the announcement of MVP, refilled the snack trays, and demanded silence as Meredith’s internal monologue began.
What was so special about this episode, “It’s the End of the World”? Well, a patient comes in after he is hit with a badly made bazooka, one of the paramedics has her hand in his side to stop the bleeding, and that same patient is found to have unexploded pieces of munitions! Long story short, the hospital is under Code Black and the surgical wing is at risk of exploding. That’s not all, though. One of the other surgeons, Doctor Bailey, is giving birth and her husband is having brain surgery in the room adjoining the man with the live explosive in his belly! Yeah, and you think you have it bad!
So just when you want to scream out, “Not another freaking hospital drama”; “Grey’s Anatomy” has evolved into one of the most addictive shows on television; even creatingits own catchphrases like McDreamy, McSteamy and va-jay-jay just to name a few. And though it began simply as a mid-season replacement for “Boston Legal”, it has escalated to heights which have not only surpassed the expectations of the writers and creators of the show, but of the network itself. If you are ever in the mood for sex that is beyond enviable, a dose of medical dilemmas which will just boggle your mind, and just a great television show to watch, tune it to “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursdays at 9pm on ABC.
