February 14th is usually thought of in two senses: either a loving, passionate day of candy hearts and roses or a pseudo-celebration of being single and actually having enough money at the end of the week to buy one more load of laundry (before that party on Saturday). Yeah, generally February 14th splits the masses.
So this year maybe you thought to yourself, “I really don’t fit into either label”. Well, you’re not alone. There is a whole spectrum of people who are either in a relationship or single and feel a plethora of emotions which are not typically vocalized during this day. Well, now there is a place where people can vent! It’s called PostSecret.
PostSecret is a community part project where people mail in homemade postcards featuring that dirty little secret which they have excruciatingly kept inside. Frank Warren, the creator of PostSecret developed the site two years ago as an art project, and now the site has not only become a form of escape from a nagging secret, but it is a release; almost like this generation’s way of communal counseling. However, the sender is not the only person who benefit from this forum.
The postcard itself becomes a spring-board for others to share similar experiences or possibly provide advice (the website also provides helpful links such as Hopeline, for those who are looking for professional help).
So last Sunday morning, as I mechanically opened the site, I noticed the Valentine’s Day theme and was surprised. There was more to Valentine’s Day than being in a relationship and “happy” or being single and S.A.D. There are postcards which reveal the loathing of Valentine’s Day (for reasons other than not finding a date), people finally celebrating the holiday at 32years old, and a sneaky lover who reveals that his or her sweetheart will be receiving year-old chocolates which were on sale!
They will make you laugh, they will make you cry and overall, they’ll show you that the world isn’t just black and white. Click on over to PostSecret because somehow you’ll find yourself through other people’s art. I know I agreed or related to some of the postcards which were featured this week. And hey, maybe you’ll be inspired to send in a secret which has been nagging at your heart strings! So go on, grab those markers and start sketching out your naughty secret and send it over. Who knows, I might just be reading your postcard on PostSecret (http://postsecret.blogspot.com) next Sunday morning.
