About a month ago, students at UC Davis created an event on Facebook and called it “Roadtrip to Pacific.” Their goal was to get an overwhelming student population to cheer on their team as they “beat” Pacific. One of their main comments was that Pacific had “6 fans” at UC Davis, when Pacific beat them earlier this year.
Pacific beat UC Davis on Monday night in the Alex G. Spanos Center in front of 3,468 spectators.
The Orange Army then created an event to counteract UC Davis’s call for student presence at the men’s basketball game on Monday night. The Pacific event was linked to the Davis event and thus trash talking ensued.
The 33 members that joined the event at UC Davis appeared to believe that they have a better basketball team than Pacific even though we’re on an 43 game win streak against the Aggies. However, the talk swayed from how good either team was to personal attacks on Pacific and Stockton as a whole.
One UC Davis student had the gumption to call Pacific students out on their academic successes by saying: “maybe I’ll consider letting you work for me with that overpriced Pacific diploma you’ll earn. Probably not though.”
This comment then proceeded into an argument over who lives in a better city. The fact of the matter is, after we won, we didn’t have to pack ourselves into a car, feeling down that our team lost another game and sit for at least an hour while driving back to Davis.
Other points to bring up include the following: a freshman at UC Davis said, “I think [Pacific] is just unwilling to accept the fact that Davis fans (Aggie Pack, Stew Squad, etc) are going to have more enthusiasm and energy than the entire home crowd.” But for anyone who was there, the Orange Army did a darn good job at counteracting their chants.
Senior Pacific student Dan Cammarano said, “when was the last time Davis beat Pacific?”
The groups’ creator replied, “it doesn’t matter when the last time Davis beat Pacific, because we’re going to win on Monday!”
This kind of hopeful thinking didn’t play through as the Tigers beat the Ags 65 – 58. It should also be noted that Pacific Senior Wolfgang Raffety scored 16 points, a career-high.
The Tigers’ record is now 11-14 overall while the Aggies are 4-20.
Upon the end of the game I ran into a crowd of Davis students and asked them how they felt about losing. They said they felt “pretty bad.” No surprise there.
In regards to the attendance for the night, 180 Pacific students showed while 83 Davis students arrived. ‘Stew’s Crew’ had 55 while the bad had 28. In total, 3,468 people arrived not including players and staff. The game aired on Comcast, so you’ll be able to catch it later this week on a replay.
