The 2007-2008 Associated Students of University of the Pacific (ASuop) Elections are in full swing. Sounds great, but what does this mean for you? Here is a quick overview of what ASuop is, what it does, and how elections work. ASuop was founded in 1899 to serve the Pacific student body as a link between the students and the administration as well as the community. ASuop is funded through the Tiger Grocery Store and student fees as part of tuition. The ASuop Office is located in the McCaffrey Center.
The ASuop governing body consists of executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The executive branch consists of the ASuop President and his cabinet. The president selects the cabinet members with approval from the legislative branch. Cabinet positions are also accepting applications, but will be chosen by the new president and senate after the upcoming elections take place. Any Pacific student may apply. More coverage on these positions will follow in a later issue.
The legislative branch consists of Senator positions for each school on campus. There are also three Senator-at-Large positions that serve the whole university student body. Each year, the Senate chooses one of its own to be the Senator Pro-Tempore. The ASuop Vice President serves as chair of the Senate and the ASuop Senate President Pro-Tempore as vice chair. Senate meetings are weekly and are open to any Pacific student. All of these positions are up for election at this time.
This spring, there are candidates running for president, vice-president, senator-at-large, and pharmacy senator. (The president and vice-president positions run on a single ticket.) This does not mean the other positions have been filled, but rather they lack candidates. Elections Coordinator, Junior Francesca Strack explained what can be done to fill these positions. Students can do a “write-in candidacy” where they choose a representative for their school by writing his or her name on the ballot itself. Also, after elections, students can apply to be their school’s senator and can be voted in by the current 2006-2007 Senate to serve next year.
Furthermore, because of the lack of candidates this year, ASuop will be accepting applications as late as tomorrow, Friday March 2 to be on the ballot, explained Jen Mazzotta, advisor for this year’s elections. Go to the ASuop Office in the McCaffrey Center or call (209) 946-2233 for more information. Elections will be held March 5th until the 8th and will be held online at eballot3.votenet.com/asuop.
