Spring Break is about three weeks away and I bet that your initial thoughts are not exactly about safety. Well, Public Safety, Cowell Health, and Pacific Dental Care Clinic are partnering up to change those thoughts!
Wednesday, March 7, 2007 between 10am and 2pm, you are welcome to drive your vehicle west, down the levee road (Dave Brubeck Way) toward the stadium. What exactly will be going on? The first annual Wellness/Dipstick Check! There will be free vehicle checks (oil, tire tread, etc.) provided by the lovely men and women of Public Safety as well as free gift packets comprised of toothbrushes, toothpaste, condom lollipops and many more items which stress the importance of physical and sexual health.
Condom lollipops, toothpaste, chap stick and Advil are a few of the items the Pacific Dental Care Clinic, and Cowell Wellness Center will distribute at Public Safetyʼs Spring Break car vehicle checks. So as to give you all a better idea of the aim of this event, I spoke with Pacific’s Victim Advocate and creator of the event, Maryann Pearson. Although Maryann’s concept for the event came from a Listserv of Universities from all over the U.S., Maryann said she felt the need to cater and deliver an event like this to Pacific so as to shed light on the number of preventative programs that the campus already provides. When asked why she felt so adamant to provide such a service to students, Maryann responded, “Since students don’t have time [in their busy schedules], it’s good to give them a chance to [be healthy] because the last thing you want is to have a break in the fun.” So this will be a great opportunity for everyone to get the things they need to do now and avoid the excuses later.
Although the free car checks and contraceptives are alluring, there is a third component to the event: dental health. Within the goodie bags, there will be far more than the items mentioned above; there will also be information about Pacific’s Dental Care Clinic which provides low cost dental care (approximately 50% off average rates) for adults and children. Maryann expressed that “there are a lot of people unaware of our dental hygiene services here, so it is essential to spread the word!” So come on by and get your car checked on March 7th and grab that goodie bag so you can have a great spring break! And as Maryann told me, “Moderation and good choices will provide you with fun times and good memories.” If after the break you feel the need to talk to someone or think you should get your own “dipstick” checked, Public Safety and Cowell Wellness are available to provide guidance, victim advocacy and health services after a not-so-PG spring break. Have fun ya’ll!
