Pacific student winds up in hospital after off-campus incident
Written by Nick Hansen
Wednesday, 28 March 2007
Thursday night, March 22, 2007, Junior Benjamin Dunphy was jumped upon leaving a friend’s 21st birthday celebration at Brandenberg’s 276.
Michael Belcher, The Director of Public Safety, said “near closing time, Ben and his friends left the bar and walked north along the walkway next to the bar. Upon reaching the corner of the building, Ben and his friends were jumped by a group of four men. Ben was the first to go down.”
Belcher continued, “Bouncers from Brandenberg’s saw the incident and ran over to stop the fight. They called Stockton PD for backup.” The four men went through the pockets of the Pacific students, taking anything of worth.
The bartender on duty was an off-duty fireman with paramedic skills. In need of immediate medical assistance, the bartender assisted Dunphy and called an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
Dunphy underwent surgery at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and his father and brother flew in to be at his side. Dunphy is expected to be out of the hospital within a week and make a quick recovery.
Joanna Royce-Davis, the Dean of Students in Student Life said Dunphy plans to continue his semester here at Pacific. The Pacific community, administrators and faculty alike are making every effort to make Ben feel at home and help him be able to continue his studies. The Dean of the School of International Studies, Margie Ensign, has visited Dunphy at St. Joseph’s and will continue to act as his link to campus.
Ben is studying International Relations and Global Studies, and is expected to graduate next May. He is a Perspectives columnist for The Pacifican and has explored a variety of controversial topics for them—largely focusing on politics.
Police have yet to identify the reason behind Dunphy’s attack.
The Stockton Police Department continues to investigate this incident and if you have any information please contact the Department of Public Safety at (209) 946-2537 or e-mail

Reason?
Sadly I think the reason behind the attack is pretty clear...it was a mugging. Best wishes to Ben for a speedy recovery!

factual information
As from ben's facebook.. apparently the information i got from public safety and student life and others i spoke with in regards to this article its 50% speculation and 50% wrong information.
I really just hoped this would provide some insight to peoples questions and get rid of rumors going around which seemed way far fetched as to what ben would do.
