As the University Center continues construction, new details are being released in regards to ‘The Lair’, the student named pub. These details have proven to perk students’ interest in staying at Pacific for graduate school. The goal of the pub is to keep students on campus thus lowering DUI’s and making Pacific money off our desire to consume vast quantities of “sparkling barley and hops cider.”
After speaking to the “internationally renowned design firm” for the University Center, the plan of implementing “The Pit” into ‘The Lair’ has been approved*. This room will not cost extra nor take space away from student users. For anyone who has been to “Bar None” in San Francisco (its on Union St & Buchanan St), you will know that behind their bar they have a set of Beirut tables set up for patrons use. Pacific has agreed to an implementation of this room and are working hard to keep this information classified. “The Pit”, as it will be called will have a tile floor and walls covered in photographs from Facebook of Pacific students playing the game. Pacific has sought sponsorships from Anheuser- Busch (the creator of Natty Light), Budweiser, Coors, Dixie (the red cup manufacturer), and the Bookstore will provide Tiger branded ping-pong balls. Junior Stefanie Heminger said “now that Pacific will have The Pit, I am actually planning to stay here for graduate school.” Tables will be student designed and laminated to help protect the surface from the elements. Standing room around tables will be wide enough for a group of college students to stand comfortably without interfering with the game. The Pacific Speech and Debate team will host a debate in George Wilson Hall to determine house rules for the pub so that no rule issue shall arise. However, patrons are allowed to come in with their own rules of play as they see fit. The School of Engineering and Computer Science (SOECS) has spent the past year researching technology on electronic scoring and features artificial intelligence that will work hand-in-hand with a rule set chosen by the players. This system has been rumored to feature sensors in the table to sense bounces, cameras above the table to show where the ball was released from and weight sensors to determine if an unfinished cup has been set down on the table. SOECS has also built functionality into the Facebook Community page, to have live updates of scores and standings for the players at home to follow. Sign-ups for tables can be made online, in the Baun Fitness Center or in The Lair itself. Rec-sports thought about opening Beirut Tournaments as apart of their nightly activities would garner a fuller student interaction. Standings will be updated in each week’s Pacifican as usual. A pricing plan per game has yet to be figured out, but will be cost effective for all Pacific students. “The Pit” will be a student run position with job duties including hosing the room down each night, taking out the trash and monitoring the games. Friday nights has been specified as the “end of the week / start of the weekend tournament.” Pacific Professors, staff, alumni and current students are encouraged to come out and try their hand at the game. The men’s basketball team has also hinted at using the room for post-season practice. Views: 317
