Reach Out ‘N Rock concert: Agenda change but rock on PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jennifer Hite-Smith - Managing Editor
Tuesday, 10 April 2007
Pacific’s second annual Reach Out ‘N Rock Concert will feature Slightly Stoopid. Opening for the rock group will be The Expendables. The event will take place on April 27th at Stagg Stadium on campus. The concert will begin at 7PM with doors opening at 6pm.

Originally, the concert was scheduled for 8PM inside the Alex Spanos Center. Due to commencement construction and other logistics, the concert was moved to its current outside location. When the event was organized, a contract was not signed to reserve the Alex Spanos Center even though specific dates had been set with both parties. Jennifer Mazzotta, Assistant Director of Programming for ASuop, clarified the situation however.

”Even if there was a contract we would have been bumped due to commencement trumping everyone at the university. Commencement is a very important event,” Mazzotta said.

The time change is a consequence of moving the concert outside.

“Stockton city ordinance states all amplified sound must end by 10pm sharp,” said Mazzotta. Although the change was made after the concert details were released, Stagg Stadium had been the first choice of the concert organizers.

“Originally we researched the stadium but due to weather and city noise ordinance we chose to move it inside,” Mazzotta said.

The Reach Out ‘N Rock Concert is only in its second year, and it was Mazzotta and the ASuop crew’s tough task to find and book a band. The process is long and takes patience, explained Mazzotta.

It includes “contacting groups, getting interest, sending in a written offer...waiting, waiting, waiting for an answer and then either the offer expiring or an answer of no is given, then we move on,” she said. “If a ‘yes’ is given then we negotiate all the fine details and then get a contract.”

Originally, The Roots were rumored to be this year’s concert performers. However, they were unable to officially commit to the event. When The Roots showed interest in the concert, they had already booked a previous event at another location. But, because the concert is a way of encouraging students to take on community service, The Roots tried to reschedule their previous arrangements in order to book the concert. However, they were unable to do so and Slightly Stoopid will be taking on Pacific instead.

The concert is put on as a coordinated effort between ASuop and the Center for Community Involvement (CCI). Students are encouraged to volunteer for ten hours in the Stockton Community, log their service, and attend the concert for free! These students also get to attend a free reception prior to the concert. Any amount of community service beyond the initial ten hours can be credited towards raffle prizes. Those who do not participate in community service can purchase tickets at the box office or at ASuop. Tickets are $25 regular admission and $15 for students.

Even if what Mazzotta claims is true, why were the roots advertised? Why were there press releases specifically for the Roots? Why didn’t they have a contract for Spanos when the event was planned in the fall? Do you really think that an event planned for months would have been so easily moved if the contract was signed in the fall semester? Now that the time and place has changed, Slightly Stoopid could even opt out of their original contract. Where will ASUOP be then? How many people will they be letting down? How many people have already been let down? I would have liked to see some student reactions from the changes as well as the story from someone who doesn’t need to cover up their mistakes with lame excuses.

basically.. as i understand it.. asuop is doing nothing with out money... but logging hours so they can get paid.

adam ellison claims to have done a ton of stuff like put the swippy card thing on the tennis courts but thats a lie.

asuop needs to get their acts together and start doing some work, too bad this was called out on them so late in the year.
