As my senior year comes to a close, I find myself picking the topics I write on very carefully. From the beginning of time, at Pacific, I have felt that Physical Plant is one of the most under-appreciated entities on this campus. They are responsible for keeping campus beautiful, cleaning our restrooms in the dorms and fixing things on campus.
I would first like to thank the guys in Physical Plant who helped me fix a broken car window when my car was broken into last year, to the guy who built me a small table to put my stereo receiver on in my apartment and to the numerous others who cut the lawn in the townhouses, take out the trash dumpsters when they pile high, the list goes on and on. Physical Plant employees are best recognized by their little orange electrical carts they drive around campus. These little, ‘pick-up truck’ golf carts carry their gear so they may do their work to the best of their abilities. To the crew who is responsible for cleaning the restrooms in our dorms, you deserve a big “Thank You” from everyone living in the halls, from the weekend pukers to those who for some reason are unable to put their trash in the proper receptacles. These lovely ladies (at least from what I have experienced), clean our halls, vacuum the floors and keep our living areas livable. I “wag my finger” to you students who repeatedly trash our restrooms and make a mess of campus. Earth day was last Sunday, perhaps you learned something. Moving on. There must be a group of guys who make up the “Keep Campus Beautiful” campaign. Their job is to cut and edge the grass, trim the trees, take out the trash, blow the sidewalks and paint the buildings. I am sure the list is longer, but those little things are what really makes campus what it is. Physical Plant seems like the handy-man workforce on campus, they’re made up experts in their field. These guys get to be “Weekend Warriors” seven days a week. For instance, there is a young man on the night crew who used to work for an auto repair company. When a window shattered one night, he came by, knew how to setup trash bags on the floor and broke down the window in a clean fashion. He was in, out and all was well in a very short period of time. The guys who drive across the bridge at the end of the day usually will wave to those they have helped in the past. Students have the ability to make a connection with these guys and owe a little bit of gratitude to them. The common response I have received, upon them fixing anything on campus is “we’re just doing our job.” It is their job that makes campus work, stay clean and beautiful and keeps Pacific operating on the level that it does. Thanks again for all the work that you do, it really means a lot. Views: 188
