Stockton has spear-it! PDF Print E-mail

It seems as if there was an excuse to tolerate the valley heat this past weekend: Stockton’s 22nd Annual Asparagus Festival (April 27th-29th). A three day agricultural affair of food, fun, and entertainment occurs every year in Downtown Stockton because of San Joaquin’s number one product: the asparagus.

Regarded as one of the best food festivals in the West, the Asparagus Fest is best known for its deep fried asparagus. This mouth-watering dish would make anyone risk a slight third degree burn from biting into a spear too quickly after receiving a fresh batch. But that’s not the only delicious asparagus dish available; there was also Asparagus Pasta and the amazing Asparagus Tri-tip. For those of us above the drinking age there was also the ever-sofamous Aspararita and this year’s new drink, the Asparagus Bloody Mary.

ImageIf the food was not your main attraction, there was also the music and miniconcerts held on two stages within the festival, a very hip Got Milk? Gravity Tour in the center of the festival and a multitude of arts & crafts vendors selling items from tie dye t-shirts to black and white photography.

Like any other festival, the Asparagus Fest had attendee driven events such as an eating competition (Deep Fried Asparagus competition) and a hole-in-one golf competition. There was also the Kaiser Permanente Great Spear-it Run in which many Pacific students participated.Image

The Asparagus Fest is a great little tradition that actually highlights the best of Stockton and its residents! Why not partake in the fun and get some great food and some unique crafts in the process! So if you missed out, stop on by next year because this is the friendlier side of Stockton you will want to see!
